  • IMPACT

    IMPACT

    • Only 4 months after making this film and showing it in the community the councilor interviewed by Thami managed to find a way to solve the problem. Now the standpipes are all working!
    • The local community no longer have to walk miles to the river and risk illnesses associated with drinking dirty water. See the Waiting for Water PHOTOSTORY for more detail.
    • The community trainees have gone on to form a Peoples Video Hub with InsightShare - Insight eThekweni - in Inanda Township.  Click here to read more.
    • Insight eThekweni and our partner The Valley Trust are continuing to work with many other marginalised communities using Participatory Video.

  • Description

When people living near the small tea estate in Inanda saw water pipes being laid in October 2004, they were overjoyed. Standpipes would soon be spouting water, they were told…but they waited in vain. Three years later, Inanda residents planned, directed and filmed 'Waiting for Water' as a local lobbying tool...and the impacts were immediate.

This video was part of a 2 year Participatory Video training programme which has led to the creation of a community run Peoples Video Hub - Bamb'umlilo ('Catch the fire') - in Inanda township and has developed Participatory Video capacity with local NGO partner; The Valley Trust.  Long-term PV projects are now in place, community members are earning money through the hub activities and the ripples created by this first training continue to make waves locally!
